Canadian Ultimate

Whoa!

Watching the University of Western Ontario Sharks play Ultimate is a joy, a feast, some real entertainment. The Sharks are a team of stars with a mix of superstars thrown in for additional flavour. Hmm…those first two sentences are rather odd but I’m presently at a loss for words in how to describe this team. I’ve played with many of the players on the UWO team over the last year and I know firsthand what an incredible bunch they are.

Big weekend

European Championships Finals are afoot as of right now and there’s likely quite a bit of excitement over there (Twitter trend) . Locally Eastern Championships are in London (hosted by UWO Sharks). Steven Trainor has a Women’s Preview on his blog. It’s going to be a soggy weekend for all teams that compete and even soggier for those that watch from the sidelines (namely me). I’m going to head to London to try and provide on-site coverage (Twitter feed: http://twitter.

Oh the glory…

This past weekend concludes my Canadian summer touring season for the year and I suspect that for most it was a rather exciting season. Over the last few seasons I’ve started playing with Hamilton players (Mayhem in particular) quite a bit more and have expanded my core group of Ultimate friends. More often than not I find people don’t pickup enough on other teams and try to stay in their “safe zone” by playing almost exclusively with the same groups of people year after year.

Yikes…

A bit of neglect so a few updates. Playing at Unknown Legendsthis weekend where we shall defend our title from last year. The teams this year appear to be tougher than in the past and I look forward to the challenge. It’ll be a great way to wind down post CUC and get ready to windup for CHC. Lenny and I chatted a few nights ago about how to make Ultimate more TV friendly and spectator friendly (drawn out of a conversation on how to perhaps get people playing full time when they’re in their prime).

A sign of the times…

I haven’t posted in a bit due to being busy with various activities and I prefer that my words convey a message that I truly care about to you, the reader. So I post here with news of Ultimate out of Southern Ontario, news about the times, how things are developing, and how much fun we’re all about to have. The last few years have consisted of three seasons for most of us in Ontario: tryout season, Canadian touring season (culminating with CUC), and the fall fun season.

CUC 2009: Even more photos

As people get back to their normal lives and recover they manage to find time for processing and posting of photos. Jon Hines (of Karma) has posted his photos online and they can be found here: http://picasaweb.google.com/jon.plays.ultimate/CanadianNationalUltimateChampionships2009?authkey=Gv1sRgCO_Q8tSB3-fFRw&feat=directlink#

Saturday Bloody Saturday

Every season comes down to a moment or a game or a situation where everything hangs in the balance. For those of us who enjoy professional sports it may be early in the season as we see the Boston Red Sox sweep the Jays out of the pennant race in August, or it may be later on as we see a pivotal game 7 with LeBron vs Garnett. In each situation there are winners and losers.
