I need to explain this

During the normal course of writing articles, I try to inject some levity into them. This may come in the form of a joke or sarcasm. Most of the time these attempts at humor fall flat but they fit within the context and do not have a negative impact in perceptions that the audience may hold. Other times though, there may be misconceptions which do not have broad impact. On the rare occasion something that I posted or said does have an impact because I failed to provide context and expected the readers to understand what was posted.

Knee surgery – Part 1

As mentioned a few weeks agomy knee has not been in the best of conditions and that some surgical operations would be required in order to make it more stable. I thought I would provide a few updates so that those of you that are may experience the same issues know what to expect. I’m also writing this out as for those interested in the medical fields. Last November I side stepped aggressively and reached back to grab a disc.

On Feedback and Neural Processes

You’ve probably heard about the Go matches between Lee Sedol and DeepMind’s AlphaGo that the latter won 4-1. You’ve probably heard about deep learning and the hype around machines replacing humans. This post is going to be about how to use the principles of deep belief networks to quantitatively think about coaching and improving the performance of players.

2015 USA Ultimate Club Championships Thoughts

I’m lucky to get three seasons of Ultimate each year; the first is a European tour that starts/ends with Paganello, the second is the Canadian series (read thoughts ), and the third is the USA Ultimate series. This year was interesting due to the level of competition but more importantly the level of frustration. I’ve waited a week to see what would happen and I’m a little disheartened with a lack of momentum on some key issues.

2013 – Part 1 – Furious vs GOAT

It’s about that time of year, a time when after a hiatus I feel like writing again. I’ll get a few articles out the door before something else will come along and require my time and attention. However, time is what has passed and it’s been an interesting year for Ultimate. I’ve had the privilege to sit on the edge of the field as yet another year of Ultimate has played itself out.

Happy New Year…NOPE!

Happy New Year and all other pleasantries. Like a grumpy groundhog I am poking my head out to look around and I am not liking what I see. Well, that’s not entirely true. What I’m seeing is articles where Women Ultimate players (note: Women Ultimate player, not Women’s Ultimate players) write about their experiences and then, this is the part I don’t like, are derided by men. Seriously, this is how we’re starting 2014?

U23 Thoughts

Perched above field 3 at York University I had a unique perspective on a number of games at U23 World Championships. In one day I alone I watched, filmed, live streamed, and commented on five games in a row. Plenty of long days also led to a number of thoughts that I’d like to share with you. Firstly, Ultimate is healthy and we should expect great things from our youth. While not everybody was able to make it there were a substantial number of teams from around the world and the growth of Ultimate in South America is a good step forward.

Hurray?

Congratulations to the Toronto Rush for winning in their first year in the league with a win vs Madison 16-14. The Rush capped a perfect season 18-0 and a large point differential; and therein lies a problem. A problem that I discussed way back at the start of the season and one that remains one of the most critical issue to both Toronto and the AUDL. Let me expand upon this by saying that I have been to almost every home game this season.

Sidelines 2012 – 01 – 21

Welcome! To the second Sidelines of 2012, which is shaping up to be quite a year. The AUDL, the NGN, the end of the world, it’s even an election year. (Colbert/Stewart 2012! Hey South Carolina, a vote for Herman Cain is a vote for Colbert, just saying.) Bob was right, the times they are a-changin’.  This week on Sidelines: Ultimate Digg Stanford Bloodthirsty v Cal UGMO The Top 10 The Bottom 10 The NexGen Network!

Sidelines 2012 – 01 – 06

Happy doomsyear! 2012 is upon us, so let’s make the most of it. My new years resolution: go to at least one tournament I’ve never been to. Achievable I think. But enough about me, if there’s one thing I’d like to see achieved this year, it’s filling the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan come August 12. Big goings on in the Ultimate Frisbee world these days, and I mean BIG. This week on Sidelines: Memories of WUCC 2010 Stanford v Alumni, Timbits style The AUDL A look into the Buffalo Hunters’ Combine from Skyd’s Zack Smith The most exciting map in recent history
