A viewers guide to day 1 at CUC 09.

There are some really interesting matchups on the day 1 schedule for
CUC 09. If you’re on a bye, or just there watching, take a glance at
these great matchups and you’ll be in for some good ultimate.
8:30 am.
Coed. 1) 2-Liquid vs 10-Monster field 4
The schedule makers weren’t fooling around in the coed division as we
get one of the best matchups right off the bat Thursday morning.
Ontario 1 and 2 go head to head on field 4. Liquid and Monster have a
long standing friendly rivalry which saw Liquid take a 11-4 lead at
regionals in Waterloo this year, before holding on at softcap 13-11.
Monster scored 6 points in 8 mins, to shock Liquid. Key Matchups in
this one will be Pat Dolan and Higy, Blue and Peyton, as
well as seeing how Monster holds up after losing one of their keys to
the team, Zan Zan. Can Monster handle Liquid’s O line, which was running on all cylinders for most of Mixed Up.
- 4-RIP vs 12-Tundra field 10.
Those tired of seeing Monster and Liquid trade blows can walk on over
to field 10 where RIP will be looking for revenge on Tundra. At Mixed
up, Tundra climbed back from a 9-5 deficit, lead by Craig “Frogger”
Froats to shock the Quebec 1 seed, 10-9. It was a much needed win for
Tundra whose Confidence soared after the win. The Rey/Frogger matchup
(if they matchup) should be very interesting; when he wants to, Frogger
can be a phenomenal ultimate player.
10:15 am.
Coed. 1) 8-Gecko vs 9-Oui UC Field 3
Staying in the coed Division, the 8 vs 9 matchup pits East vs West as
Gecko from Quebec matches up with Alberta’s Oui UC. I’ve never seen
Oui UC play, but Gecko had a very good Mixed up tournament, losing in
the quarters to eventual champs ONYX and looks to be peaking in time
for the biggest tourney of the year. Plus, they have cool jerseys.
- 7-Pandemic vs 10-Monster Field 5
Staying with Monster, they next face a team from BC. It’ll be
interesting to see how the East and West matchup here as well.
12 pm
Open 1) 2-Pheonix vs 10-Grand Trunk Field 4
Grand Trunk could possibly be the most mis-seeded team at the
tournament. If everyone plays to potential they could easily crack the
top 8, and look to make some noise in the Semi’s. Pheonix earned the 2
seed over Mephisto at the New York Invite, winning on Universe point,
and they are looking to prove that they belong with the big boys this
year. The additions of Paul Chambers and Shawn Harkins look to offset
the loss of Derek Alexander for the bird, and their Aerial Show. A key
matchup in this one will be Luke Phalen vs Andrew Butler.
Women 2) 8-Fusion vs 9-PPF Field 14
PPF sees if it can regroup without key member Darcy Drummond and upset
the higher seeded Fusion.
1:45pm
Women 1) 4-Wild Rose vs 5-Stella Field 17
Very big matchup on Day 1 that could shape the Semi’s. Wild Rose from
AB takes on what must be an unhappy Stella. Last years champions have
had a challenging start to the year, and come in seeded 5, and look to
move up to the power pools with a win over the Alberta squad. The
winner of this game sets up an interesting game against Lotus (if
Lotus holds seed) later in the day.
Mixed 2) 4-RIP vs 5-Chaos Field 10
Local squad Chaos looks to take out the top team from Montreal
heading into the Power pools Friday.
- 12-Tundra vs 13-BFC Field 11
Most probably, the winner of this game will move on to the Power Pools
while the loser will be forced into the relegation round. With both
teams trying to earn a birth to Worlds, this matchup will be intense. Matchups to watch are Damien Kwok and Chris Welsh as well as Geofford Seaborn and Neil Griffith.
3:30 pm
Open 1) 8-Demon vs 9-Sofa Kings Field 3
Demon looks to continue on it’s great season so far as they take on
Sofa Kings, with the winner most likely to take a win over to the
power pools Friday.
-
7-Mangina vs 10-Grand Trunk Field 5
-
6-Too Bad vs 11-SirLoin Field 7
5:15 pm
Open 1) 4-Mephisto vs 5-General Strike Field 10
Strike looks to use home advantage in toppling the defending finalist
from the east.
- 12- ROY vs 13-Tommy Douglas Dream Machine Field 11
Quite probably the winner of this game will move into the power pools.
Both teams are athletic and conditions will play a major role in the
outcome of this game.
6pm
Women 1) Winner Pool 1 vs Winner Pool 4 Field 14
Quite possibly a Lotus vs Stella rematch, they always tend to give us
good games. Lotus/Wild Rose will also be interesting, as it will be
nice to see how Lotus matches up with a team from the West.
