While Regionals for most regions are this weekend the Praries had their Regionals at Flatlands last weekend.
In case you didn’t spot it Mark Lloyd of General Strike posted this comment providing a recap of Open:
Prarie Regional Update: Tommy Douglas Dream Machine from Saskatoon stayed home earning the 3rd seed. General Strike and Mangina played for the first spot out of the praries. Mangina was down a few players which really showed as strike went up 6-1 early on and cruised to victory. I think the final was 17-8(9?). The two teams also met in the final on sunday of Flatland with General Strike winning that game 15-9. Despite the fairly large score difference a lot of points were highly contested. Mangina will be a good team at CUC especially when they get some guys they are missing back
More information was also provided by the Executive Director of MODS Corey Draper:
Strike beat Mangina in their CUC seeding game on the Saturday.
Strike went on to win the tournament and the $1500 cash prize.
Saskatoon did not attend the tourney and will be seeded 3rd in the Prairies as a result.
Fusion (WPG), Sirens (Regina) and Pandora (Saskatoon) battled over the 2 Prairie women’s bid.
The CUC Qualifier games were held on Saturday.
Fusion and Sirens each defeated Pandora.
Sirens squeaked out a win over Fusion to take the top seed.
A Winnipeg team made up of Chaos Women + Winnipeg and American P/ups won the tournament and the $500 cash prize.
Fusion did beat the Sirens in the semi final but Sirens will have the #1 seed for the Prairies.
Pandora has been eliminated from the CUC.
Flatland was held at “Winnipeg Ultimate Park” (WUP).
The CUC will use these fields as well as Maple Grove Rugby Park (same complex) for a total of 17 fields.
The only other info I can pass on is that MOFO (WPG JRS) defeated Swarm (Winnipeg Co-ed) in the Finals of the Open Rec division.
(There is no co-ed division at this tournament but most of the Open Rec teams play as co-ed teams)
Chaos split into Men’s and Women’s squads as mentioned for the weekend.
Are you heading into town for Regionals to watch or support your team? Will you be taking photos? Writing any blog entries? Wanting to write blog entries? If so then please let me know so that I may link to your photos or blog during or after Regionals.
There are no official photographers for the event so all are welcome to shoot games. Please check with teams as to how close you can get to the fields, I suspect that none will mind if you’re right on the line. Please be aware of plays close to the line and provide plenty of space, take your cues from players on the sideline.
Same guidelines as Photographers.
Weekend…c’est le weekend! A few days to go but a few exciting adventures for Ontario Ultimate. I apologize to International readers, I’ll get more International content up soon.
For Mixed there’s a little tournament called Northern Flights taking place in North Bay. While Liquid (Waterloo), Tundra (Toronto), Sick Mitts (Barrie), Big Fish (Ottawa), Druid (London), Crisis (Waterloo), Desklamp (Guelph), and Zen (Toronto) are attending a few other teams (MONSTER and BFC in particular) will be missing out and so we won’t quite get a Regionals preview. It will be interesting as we should get some idea of seeding for Regionals but it’s not clear how MONSTER will be placed ahead of July 11th. This is also the first time this season that a full strength Liquid will be playing in a tournament and while a “The Dockers” vs Liquid finals is almost a certainty I favour Liquid heavily in that contest.
Location for Regionals will be made available early next week.
Regina Masters have withdrawn their bid.
Winnipeg will be entering a second Junior’s team.
The CUC has updated their Regionals page and while details are still slim the following details are available:
Alberta, July 11th and 12th for all divisions.
Ontario, July 11th and 12th for all divisions.
Prairies, July 4th and 5th (likely at Flatlands) for Master’s, Open, and Women’s.
Quebec, July 11th and 12th for all divisions other than Juniors.
Quite a few folks have been asking me what date Ontario Regionals will be on and also whether I know where it is. I’m mostly in the dark just like everybody else but here’s what I do know (from reliable sources):
- “Aiming for Regionals on the July 11th weekend”.
- Trying to have all of the divisions at one location.
- Rumored locations that I’ve heard about include: Hamilton, Barrie, and Kingston.
I’ll update as I find out more.
