CUC 2011 Open Preview

In the last of our previews we look at the Open Division. Much like the other divisions a World’s year brings out the best and reorganizes the landscape. This time is no different but while the Open division has gotten stronger some markets have experienced a slight downturn.
In Ottawa Phoenix has felt the loss of some players to Trainwreck. Likewise in Montreal where Odyssèe has siphoned off some of the Open players. Both of those losses are tempered by the return of GOAT and Furious George. Furious amongst the most famous teams in the world and GOAT amongst the leading elite.
With sixteen teams and a contribution from every region Ontario leads the way with seven(7) teams, Quebec follows with three(3), Atlantic and BC each contribute two(2), and finally Prairies and Alberta with one(1) each. Divided into four pools each team has a chance to make the finals on the first two days of play before the top and bottom quarters split on Saturday.

CUC 2011 Women’s Preview

Continuing in our theme of previews we now reach the Women’s division and as it’s a World’s year it is quite competitive. While CUC will start on Thursday many of the teams competed in fiercely contested Regionals last month. Women’s Ultimate has seen quite a bit of growth in recent years it still has 12 spots at CUC. There have been a few calls amongst players to open up spots but the true test of demand will be next year.
Divided into two pools of six the Women’s teams play five games before playing pre-quarters on Friday afternoon.

CUC 2011 Masters Preview

In 2007 Tombstone won CUC in Toronto against Ottawa. Tombstone subsequently retired, to some degree, and showed no signs of life until earlier this year. Likewise, teams established twenty years ago (like Nomads) have dusted off the cleats and are returning to the big stage.
This year the Masters division will be the most competitive in perhaps a decade, more competitive then 4 years ago and it promises to be exciting.

CUC 2011 Mixed Preview
Unfortunately, my predictions will be rather tame. A missed upset on Thursday could have consequences for an entire bracket. This coupled with the even distribution of talent in various “seed groups” has led to a somewhat unpredictable tournament. Sounds like a cop out. It probably is. I am quite lazy. However, I will offer a few guesses, offer some analysis, and leave you with a brief summary of the teams attending.

CUC 2011 Juniors Preview

Last year, in Sherbrooke, there were a number of teams that invited players from outside of their region to join them. Those out of region players have gone back to their home regions and, along with their coaches, have returned to CUC with their own teams. The Juniors division this year is truly reflective of the amount of work put in around the country to develop the game.
In the remainder of this post we’ll take a look at the starting pools, evaluate teams, and make a few predictions.

2011 Ontario Open Regionals Recap
Hello, my name is Lee Gonzalez and I played on Too Bad until I injured my shoulder Jan 2/11. Open Regionals was held at Kiwanis Park Waterloo and hosted by WODS on July 9-10 2011. It was nice seeing friends for the first time in months. From the get go I was thinking about the ranking and how teams would do comparatively. For some teams this tournament would be to fine tune their strategies and stressful for others. Presumtively GOAT would come first because they’re as strong as ever. The next few spots would be a battle for seeding at Nationals between Phoenix, Maverick, Feed the Geese and NADS with little or no worries of making Nationals. The real battle would be between Too Bad, GT, Firebird and ROY for the last spot.
