CUUC 2011 – Preview
Tally ho! (That’s a greeting right?) I’m sure if you’re reading this that you’ll be somehow involved in, or at least linked to by fewer degrees of separation than to Kevin Bacon, CUUC 2011 in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Earth. And so let me open by saying good luck to each and every team, player, coach and especially volunteer that will be a part of this great weekend. :)
But, before we get there, the scouting reports! For those of you sidelined and playing fantasy all weekend, listen up, this one’s for you. (And I guess the rest of you can read on too, I can’t stop you.)
The university circuit looks stronger than ever this fall, and I have no doubts that there will be come very competitive, high calibre ultimate played this weekend, on the men’s and women’s sides. I’ve asked many captains to give me a little something-something on their team and many have graciously replied, and I thank them for making my life that much easier. So, as the esteemed Mr. Carroll once said (no, not you Andy), we shall begin at the beginning and go on until we come to the end; then stop. There will be no particular order to this, other than letting the ladies go first.

Viewers Guide – Day 2
Day 2 sees the start of power pools in the Open and Mixed Division, as well as the conclusion of pool play in the Women’s Division. Masters continue their Pool play through Saturday Morning. For Men’s and mixed, I’m going to assume no upsets in pool play, of course this could change and timings are unknown, so instead I will just list some games in the open division which are interesting to watch.

NexGen vs GOAT Gallery
On a warm July evening some of the best players from the USA played the best players in Eastern Canada. While particularly tricky to shoot due to low light conditions I managed to snag a few decent photos.
NexGen hobbled by a few injuries and without a bus were showing the affects of life on the road. While the carefree NexGen warmed up individually or in pairs GOAT ran team warmups; the Observers also warmed up as a group. On the field NexGen play as a cohesive group of guys but what makes them great are their handlers. Regardless of position they able to thread the disc through the slimmest of gaps and take advantage of the athleticism of the cutters. At the same time, NexGen’s defense forced GOAT to play incuts and took away the huck game. With players normally used to wide open throws the younger cutters on GOAT never quite got into a groove. GOAT handler Adrian Yearwood anchored the handler line and maintained the tempo along with Thomson McKnight while relying heavily upon Mark Lloyd and Cam Harris upfield. It wasn’t until just before half that many of the veterans took to the field. The second half saw quite a bit of pressure from NexGen and by all accounts they were in the driving seat until a few drops let them down. GOAT wrapped up the game 15-13.
By all accounts this was not a good game for GOAT. While they were missing many of their key handlers it took them a while to adjust to the deep double/triple coverage. Since this game they have played Furious in Colorado (GOAT won) and that may not bode well for GOAT at CUC.

CUC 2011 Part 1 – Coverage
Ultimate players, fans, and supporters have been wondering where they can stay up to date with CUC 2011. Will IAmUltimate be providing coverage much like in previous years? No. This year the CUC Organizing Committee will be taking upon much of the work in live coverage of the finals. Like in past years the tournament website will offer all results and pretty good coverage. There are a few other sources of information that you should be using and here they are:
- CUC 2011 Tournament Website (www.cuc2011.com) – Results, Schedules, and General Information.
- IAmUltimate.com – We’ll try to provide previews and information throughout the tournament but we’ll be pretty busy playing.
- Live Video – Two sources on this. Finals day coverage has been arranged by the Organizers through Rogers TV. You may watch the Sunday finals at: www.rogerstv.com/cuc2011. For Juniors and Masters finals we will try to record them and broadcast them afterwards but we may also try to get some live coverage going at the fields; it’s an unknown at this time.
- Finally, follow your favourite teams on Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/search/CUC2011

WFDF WUGC 2012 in Japan!
WFDF have posted that WUGC 2012 will be held in Sakai, Japan on July 7th to 14th!
The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) announced today that it has awarded the 2012 World Ultimate and Guts Championships (WUGC) to the Japan Flying Disc Association (JFDA). This quadrennial event will be hosted in the city of Sakai, Japan, 7 – 14 July 2012.
Upon the recommendation of the Ultimate and Guts Committees, the WFDF Board of Directors approved the bid from the JFDA during their latest meeting, thus returning the World Championships to Japan for the first time since 1992.
“In the face of the adversity faced by the Japanese people due to the unfortunate events earlier this year, our decision to award the WUGC 2012 to Japan is an expression of our support for their recovery efforts and our confidence in the strong spirit and resolve of the Japanese people and Japan Flying Disc players,” commented Robert “Nob” Rauch, WFDF President, upon the signing of the Host City contract. “Japan has submitted a strong bid developed by an experienced team around JFDA President and WFDF Board member Fumio Morooka and Tournament Director Masakazu Honda. WFDF is pleased to be able to return the WUGC to Japan on the 20th anniversary of the first time the event was hosted in Japan, an event in which I personally played”.
Up to five divisions in Ultimate will be played during WUGC 2012: open, women`s, mixed, masters and possibly women`s masters. The Organizers expect a minimum of 60 national Ultimate teams across the various divisions to participate in this prestigious event. The World Guts Championship will also be showcased.
The event will be held on the 18 Ultimate fields of the J-Green Sakai national training center in the city of Sakai (Osaka Prefecture), located some 400km southwest from Tokyo, and 600 km southwest from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The Opening and closing ceremonies will be held in the main stadium of J-Green Sakai on 7 July and 14 July 2012 respectively. The main venue can accommodate some 3,500 spectators.
