Stats? What matters?

Lately I’ve been working on a small stats system for Ultimate (and general sports usage).  While I do have plans on where to go with it I’m not sharing it outside of a small group at this time.  In building the system (really just hacking it together over the last few days) I’ve learned how tricky it will be to put together a UI that will allow quick entry of all the events that Ultimate players encounter.  To that end I need to know:  What stats matter?  Do foul calls matter?  Discs grabbed in tricky situations?  Layouts?  Drops?  Misses?

To give you an example of what I’m working on you can view some of the stats for the Paganello 2009 Open Finals below (apologies for the incorrect names and numbers):

  1. i was at a tournament watching a team and they recorded their own stats… they included and differentiated between d’s and interceptions and they included callahan’s (the latter, i think, just for fun).

  2. Ravensultimate.ca – Men’s Ultimate team from Ottawa ON, representing Carleton University

Thanks to VC for our great jerseys/shorts/hats solution!

  3. There’s an iPod app called UltiStats that already has a very decent interface. It does not record any calls (other than time outs), like fouls, travels, etc. This would be interesting for me (a statistician) to know and even useful to analyze, but it’s not a necessity. UltiStats basically records points, touches and turnovers. It lets you assign credit or blame to these events. The Undo is important to have.

A significant deficiency (in my opinion), that the original UltiStats for Palm OS had, was it kept a log of the sequence of events that you could review afterwards.

More info about UltiStats can be found at http://www.ultistats.com

    • I’ve used UltiStats throughout the years and I’m drawing a few things from it for what I’m working on.

So far I’ve decided to use the event based system and am putting together a wish list of what people want and implementing it as I get the time. The stats in this post are from a very early version of the system that tracked the events.

  4. Closer to your question though:

    OFFENSIVE MANDATORY STATS
    -Points played (+/-)
-Touches (no need to seperate catch and throw because you necessarily throw if you catch unless it’s a point or a turnover).
    -Points (caught and thrown)
-Turnovers (be able to assign to thrower or receiver)

    OFFENSIVE NICE TO HAVE STATS
-Turnovers (assign 50/50 receiver/thrower or assign to team as a whole)
-Qualifiers on passes (break force, huck, punt, ?inverted)
-Qualifiers on catch (sky, layout, greatest)
-Qualifiers on D (decision, execution, great D, combination)
    -Weather conditions (rain, wind, heat)

    OFFENSIVE LUXURY STATS
-Calls against (pick travel, off. foul)
-Calls for (disc space/fast count, foul on throw, foul on catch)
-Time on field (in seconds, not number of points)

    DEFENSIVE MANDATORY STATS
    -Points played (+/-)
-Puller (with quality measure from back endzone to brick)
-Turnover (assign credit to individual or whole team)

    DEFENSIVE NICE TO HAVE STATS
-Qualifiers on D (layout, sky, stall down, hand block, …)

    DEFENSIVE LUXURY
    -Calls for (pick, travel, etc…)
-Calls against (foul, fast count/disc space, etc…)
    -Time on fields (in seconds)
