Oh the glory…

This past weekend concludes my Canadian summer touring season for the year and I suspect that for most it was a rather exciting season.

Over the last few seasons I’ve started playing with Hamilton players (Mayhem in particular) quite a bit more and have expanded my core group of Ultimate friends.  More often than not I find people don’t pickup enough on other teams and try to stay in their “safe zone” by playing almost exclusively with the same groups of people year after year.

Playing with new groups tends to open one up to exciting playing styles, different zones, and causes one to become extremely proficient at adapting to new challenges.  Playing with different groups tends to reveal the lens that your competitors view your teammates with is flawed.  It’s amazing how much a change in perspective can break old allegiances and help one become more understanding of others.

This past weekend was, put simply, quite a bit of fun.  I picked up with a team from Hamilton and we called ourselves BLeD after an incident at CUC involving a Mayhem player and a certain sanitary Dollarstore item.  Our playing style is interesting in that we always seemed to have closely matched games and we would intentionally fool around at the start of each one (except the finals).

Our ability to focus at just the right time brought us back from deficits on Sunday in our pre-semis and our post-quarters games.  I’m glad to play with a team that knows when to focus and has the confidence to know that the win is ours.

A few players on our team also play on McMaster’s Ultimate teams and they will be strong players that will make waves in the regional circuit.  I hope that they decide to play the UPA series for the experience as well as seeing where their game can go.

Personally the weekend was decent, while I didn’t prep for the tournament with the right nutrition I had a few games where I was aggressive and laid out often.  I’ve had a mental block with laying out that requires just the right mix of adrenaline coursing through me.

Bring on the UPAs.

Yikes…

A bit of neglect so a few updates.

Playing at Unknown Legends this weekend where we shall defend our title from last year.  The teams this year appear to be tougher than in the past and I look forward to the challenge.  It’ll be a great way to wind down post CUC and get ready to windup for CHC.

Lenny and I chatted a few nights ago about how to make Ultimate more TV friendly and spectator friendly (drawn out of a conversation on how to perhaps get people playing full time when they’re in their prime).  If he feels like it he’ll post his ideas.

Medicare is heading to Chicago Heavyweight Championships as well as a few Women’s teams from the region; more details closer to date.

A sign of the times…

I haven’t posted in a bit due to being busy with various activities and I prefer that my words convey a message that I truly care about to you, the reader.  So I post here with news of Ultimate out of Southern Ontario, news about the times, how things are developing, and how much fun we’re all about to have.

The last few years have consisted of three seasons for most of us in Ontario:  tryout season, Canadian touring season (culminating with CUC), and the fall fun season.  Typically most of us relax in the fall and take it easy by playing on ground that we can feel freezing as the winter solstice draws nigh.  That has so far been typical.

A few teams have had a different “typical” season of tryouts, Canadian touring, fall fun touring, and UPAs.  The few teams are GOAT, Phoenix, Mephisto, and The Capitals (I mention Mephisto as they’re pretty close and they deserve mentioning).  The aforementioned teams are amongst the cream of the crop in Canadian Ultimate and recently GOAT has also earned their place amongst the top teams in the world (ECC results speak for themselves).

Yes, these teams are part of an exclusive club, or rather I should say “were”.

Last year a small team (12 players, down to 10 or 11 after I suffered an injury) of players from Waterloo Region made the journey to several UPA tournaments including Sectionals.  While we finished behind Phoenix our games were close and we realized that we had potential.  That potential exists within every club team, the potential to make UPA finals (if even by a sliver) and to play amongst the very best this continent has to offer.

It’s an enticing offer that wasn’t lost on MONSTER either who also made the trek to Regionals last year with an enhanced roster.  While the results may have been disappointing both teams realized that there was work to be done and one could benefit greatly by playing in the UPA series.

Our enthusiasm must have rubbed off on other teams as at last count I know of a Mixed team from Hamilton and a Women’s team from Waterloo/Guelph that are considering the UPA series.

It’s hard to convey my excitement as to how great a development this is.  Competition breeds better teams and players.  Better players mean a more exciting and/or entertaining game.  The more entertaining a game the more new players our sport will attract.  Growth at the highest level leads to exponential growth at the lower levels.

There are concerns at the same time.  Will the harder and more competitive play result in spirit being lost or confused as an unnecessary part of the game?  I know that on the West coast some very competitive teams have become aggressive players and it’s a common complaint I hear from players around the world (about North Americans).  While it will certainly be positive for growth will the infusion of “new blood” that hasn’t been indoctrinated result in a loss of our own identity as players that can handle any situation through Spirit of the Game?  Perhaps that’s another conversation.

CUC 2009: Even more photos

As people get back to their normal lives and recover they manage to find time for processing and posting of photos.

Jon Hines (of Karma) has posted his photos online and they can be found here:  http://picasaweb.google.com/jon.plays.ultimate/CanadianNationalUltimateChampionships2009?authkey=Gv1sRgCO_Q8tSB3-fFRw&feat=directlink#

Saturday Bloody Saturday

Every season comes down to a moment or a game or a situation where everything hangs in the balance. For those of us who enjoy professional sports it may be early in the season as we see the Boston Red Sox sweep the Jays out of the pennant race in August, or it may be later on as we see a pivotal game 7 with LeBron vs Garnett. In each situation there are winners and losers. Like a great big metaphor for life. I have seen the New York Giants beat the undefeated Patriots in the Superbowl, and back to Boston, I’ve seen the Sox come back from 0-3 series deficit to beat the Yankees 4-3 in the ALCS and go on to win their first world series in 86 years. Or if you are not a fan of upsets, look at Michael Jordan’s resume. 6 titles, need I say more. Sports are incredible for that reason, and that’s why we love them, playing and watching, because the impossible happens.
In Ultimate you have smaller versions of these moments in every tournament, but as the season progresses and the tournaments become more important, so do the games. In terms of Liquid’s history, I have seen (and helped) us win against BFC at Regionals in 2007 the year they went on take 2nd at Nationals, and in the same year, we lost to Les Bouettes, a completely inferior team, to knock us out of the top 8. It’s all mental. Especially when you have two respectably even teams in terms of physical ability and athleticism, the mental aspect will play an even larger role in determining the outcome. It’s all mental.
Our big game/moment/situation came Saturday morning against Gecko. Anyone reading this probably knows the result. It was a very close game, a really fun game to play, but a game that I felt the wrong team won, just as in our quarters match last year against RIP. We made our share of mistakes, drops, throwaways, and our intensity definitely could’ve been higher, but we were the better team. That sounds a bit egotistical now, but I still think it’s true. So back to the whole ‘Does the best team always win?’ debate. Gecko got very lucky on a few plays (read: catching garbage throws), didn’t turn it over a lot, but I truly believe they had us beat in the mental department. This may have been from us thinking we would roll over them quite handily. Personally I have learned my lesson in this regard, but the thought still creeps into your mind at times that you will simply demolish a team before the game has even begun. Maybe this is confidence, maybe it is over-confidence. It’s a fine line.
OK, OK, I get a bit carried away with all those thoughts, maybe I should try to see it more as just a game, but I am competitive, like a lot of people playing ultimate (frisbee!) at this level. It’s hard not to get carried away when you have big expectations for your team and then they get crushed. And being the pick-up player that I was this year, I wanted to help Liquid go on a big run to the finals, and since we didn’t, I feel more then slightly responsible. I was on the field enough. I had a few lay-outs that were inches away from D’s. I had one throwaway (first point – too early to matter or big momentum swing?), but no drops. I had a ‘finger-block’ that wasn’t quite enough to get the D. Higy had a few big plays but no D’s that I can remember. Our zone was hot in the rain and muck but they were patient and worked it up and scored anyway. Blue had a big Callahan that I thought would swing the momentum , but in fact didn’t. Our O was good, but not great which it needed to be in a game like that, and not clicking like it was in other games.
We lost by two.

On the bus home I was sitting next to Neenah and on the packed bus there were a few ONYX players standing directly in front of us. “That kind of sums up our tournament,” I said. Neenah looked at me questioningly. “Always looking up at ONYX.” It was a half-hearted attempt at a lame joke, but it was also true. Based on the way they were playing I thought they would win the finals. Chaos won two very close universe games just to get to the finals; ONYX had beaten TFP then Quebec rival RIP quite handily. That, as they say, is why we play the games. Chaos takes it running away.
Invictus had a similar day, beating Blackfish in the quarters, but taking it on the chin against Mephisto, the imminent champs, to end their shot at a national title. I wish I could’ve played for them, although it would’ve been equally heart-breaking I’m sure. I took my last shot Liquid and it was awesome – I just want that one game back. My dream of winning a national title will have to wait, and may have to come with Invictus next year. I’m hoping to get to UPA’s with them but we’ll see how my schedule and finances play out. Got to get my fix in before winter hits, I hear the winter league in Calgary is not great.

Players Needed

This fall I’m captaining two squads that will head to Boracay for the 1st Asian Championships Beach Ultimate.  It will be an intense four days of Ultimate against the best teams in Asia.

You may be asking which team I’m captaining and I’ll reply (sheepishly):  Currier Island.  If you know the history behind the team then you know we play hard, do quite well, and are fiercely patriotic.  Which is why I need you!  I need players for the Open and Mixed teams.  If you or your parents are from Asia (all of it) and are interested in playing on one of our teams then please contact me ASAP:  acbu@tushar.ca

Does mine matter?

I’ve held off a few days now to see how things would develop but there seems to be a distinct sense of self-entitlement amongst all y’all that needs to be addressed.
