Le Weekend
July 4th weekend fast approaches and while that means Potlatch in the NW it means Flatlands in Manitoba (Prairie Regionals included) and Jazz Fest in Montreal.
Teams and seeds have been posted for Jazz Fest and it looks like it’s going to be tightly competitive. As expected Storm takes the top seed followed closely by PPF (who will be without their captain Darcy D. as she’s at Potlatch). Conspicously missing are Stella and Lotus persumably due to Boston Invite last weekend but one would expect Stella to play in a tournament so close to home. Perhaps the proximity of World Games also plays a role in the Stella ladies deciding against Jazz Fest.
In Open Mephisto and Phoenix occupy the top spots while GLUM and NADS also found in the top eight. Perhaps a bit underseeded is Medicare a Waterloo Region team that was defeated by Phoenix in the game to go at UPA Sectionals last year. Medicare has expanded their roster and continued to develop talent to bring a stronger team to Jazzfest. You’ll also be able to find Medicare (with a slightly different roster) at No Borders. The rest of the teams are closely matched and I expect each game to be hard fought.
Expect photos and perhaps a bit of video from the weekend.
I suspect I should make some sort of “call” on what happens this weekend.
Going against the grain I’ll say that Phoenix will defeat Mephisto in Open and that Storm will hold off PPF for Women’s (I’ll still be cheering for PPF).

No rehash!
Rather than post exactly what you’d get from score reporter you can find a better summary of results from Boston Invite 2009 at Steven Trainor’s blog.
GT finishing as well as it did points out that it was seeded far too low and should perhaps compete in Eastern’s I or perhaps even Elite next year (Colt .45 and Brooklyn are far too young and inexperienced to be up there right now).
Great to see Lotus win and I look forward to their match against PPF at Regionals after this weekend.

A big day!
GOAT defeats Ironside 14-13 in the Boston Invite finals while Lotus defeats Nemesis to win the Women’s finals. More details as I have them.

Saturday are…
Results from Boston Invite Saturday are coming in on score reporter. As expected both Ironside and GOAT have finished at the top of their pools and have the rest of the day off. Mephisto finished 0-3 in their pool (game against GOAT was not as close as CUT) and will face off against Providence Pack Dogs at 1700 (5 pm).
PoNY also went 0-3 today and had a much closer match against Ironside than at CUT (where they lost 13-3). PoNY will play Forge at 1700 to determine whether or not Forge has completed their CUT turnaround. Phoenix finished 1-2 and will face the second place team out of C pool (game results not in).
Interestingly Grand Trunk is in H pool which seems rather low for a GOAT feeder team. They should be seeded higher than Red Circus, Brooklyn, Philly Love, and perhaps Colt .45 (I’ve seen the last three teams play inside of the last two months) and deserve better than playing for 31st place or whatever it is down in Easterns II/III.
Women’s results are still filtering in and will be available in the recap later today.

Sluggish Weekend
Boston Invite 2009 is in play and there will be updates from the field as I have them.
One piece we do have (courtesy of Mike Jones of GOAT) are the results from the showcase game on Friday evening at 2000 (8 pm) vs Ironside:
Tight & long game against Boston, lost 12-15. Broken twice – D line needs 2 convert. Hopefully c them in the finals Sunday.
So there you have it, a better result than Cazenovia and let’s look for GOAT and Ironside in the finals.

Oy vey
Ever have one of those games? I feel like I had one on the weekend while playing LouEvil. Normally things click when I play Ultimate and every pass gets there before the D, I know what the cutters are thinking, and I select the right throw. That game though…sigh!
Let me explain what happened. We had won our crossover game first thing in the morning and now we played LouEvil in the pre-semis. The first game had gone well with reasonable defense, great hucks, and in general we had a good time. We carried our momentum into the second game and took an early lead before starting to falter. I recall one point where our zone caused 6 turn overs and I threw three turns (one ill-advised throw, a drop, and a pressure D) before we finally managed to score. I should have suspected that I was playing terribly at that point but didn’t until in the second half came my wake up call: A scoober that faded away from the cutter who was going in the opposite direction. What should have been an easy breakforce throw for a point instead became my defining moment of the tournament.
The problem with that throw wasn’t that I made it or that I didn’t recognize that it was bad (I eventually did recognize how bad it was) but that it happened to be our last game of the day. There’s no way to determine whether or not I had mentally refocused after that game.
One of the most important abilities that any athlete must have is the ability to refocus upon the game. Frank Menendez, who I’ll talk about in later posts, told me that while I had made a few throwaways it was important to recover with safe play. Instead of removing myself from the game that I should stay in, play a role but change that role slightly.
I’ve seen many players that remove themselves from games simply because of bad play. It’s important to return to a state of mind where one plays well and make an impact on the field. Removing oneself from the game tends to hurt your own team more than helping by doing what you do best.
It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get to try and make a comeback but I’m sure that it will happen again and I’ll get another shot at redemption.

A weekend in O.
I apologize for not posting earlier but sometimes things get hectic and I’d rather be outside throwing the disc. To refresh your memories the big three events in North America were: Northern Flights (North Bay, ON), No Surf (Cleveland, OH), and Solstice (Eugene, OR).
