SBB 2009 – Quick update
Games yesterday went pretty much according to expectations.
There are four pools of four with all the top teams taking their pools as expected. The only “upset” was Karma over Mayhem 1 (Mayhem 2 is their feeder team). Karma is composed of many Open, Women’s, and Masters players from Toronto, Waterloo, and Guelph. It looks like a Liquid vs Karma final is in the cards with wind playing a huge factor (gusts up to ~60km/h).
Photos and results coming after the finals today.

What to do?
I haven’t posted for a couple days but things have been busy. In between preparing more content, working on projects, traveling, league, practice, and oh…work, it has been a hectic few days.
So what’s coming up this weekend?
The last few days have provided plenty of rain to soften the ground in preparation for Soggy Bottom Bowl in Guelph. It’s a fun tournament that’s usually held on the first weekend of May (rather than the last) but the TD was busy earlier in the season and the city wouldn’t open a certain few fields. Normally SBB is also a part of the tryout schedule rather than a regular season schedule and this should be our first good look at the teams coming out of Ontario (other than BFC and Big Fish).
Why does this matter to the rest of the world? I know of at least three teams from Ontario looking to head to Prague. Ontario also has the largest contingent of Mixed teams heading to Canadian National Championships and it’s likely that two or three of the teams going to Prague will be from Ontario. Stay tuned!
While these teams are certainly competitive in Canada this fall many of the gents will form up into Medicare to try and get to Regionals. Last year a shortened roster of 12 was hobbled to 11 after I decided to continue playing on my injured knees. This year we’ll be looking to enter a stronger and slightly larger roster.
That’s all from this part of the world; next week will have Women’s and Open coverage as well as a Gender Blender preview.

What are those Aussies up to?
Given my interest in International affairs I contacted AFDA Director of High Performance Piers Truter about their recent Championships as well as 2010. My primary purpose for contacting him was to determine whether or not it was time to get excited about the next International meetup.
Our first chance to get an idea of who from Australia will make the trek to Europe will be on July 1st 2009. The July 1st deadline is a non-binding deadline by which teams with an interest in Prague must make their intent known. The early lead time also allows AFDA organizers to determine whether qualification tournaments are needed. While AFDA National Championships were on April 23rd Piers stated that “The April results are not considered in this decision.” The deadline will also allow AFDA to lobby for additional bids should they need them.
The second deadline for teams is in October where they will need to pay a team fee and presumably learn when qualification tournaments will be. Piers has indicated that the tournaments will likely occur in “early 2010 (Feb-May).” The picture from the Australian side isn’t as straight-cut as for North American and European teams. The cost involved for Australians traveling to Europe is enourmous and so the thought of Prague isn’t even in the minds of most players.
All this begs the question: With many players unable to justify the expense will there be an amalgamation resulting in teams similar, in strength, to the National teams in Vancouver? Will there be any Australian teams attending?

May Day – 2009
It’s over for yet another year. I think Tournament Director’s have a love/hate relationship with their tournaments. We like putting on the tournament but we don’t like waking up so early or staying up so late. Regardless, it’s over and here are some results.
